Report on River Tawe Boat Trip 2nd April, 2012

The Society was treated to a most unusual talk today (Monday, 2nd April) – travelling along the River Tawe on board  the barge the Black Prince.   It was organised by the Swansea Community Boat Trust, which provided us with a floating speaker, Charles, who gave us a running commentary about the past industrial and port facilities along the banks of the Tawe.   Instead of a slideshow, we progressed through the lower Tawe valley and were able to see all the salient points from the cabin windows.

A most enjoyable visit  – with a good buffet to round it off.

Theatre Visit 16th November

The Society ‘s annual visit to the Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea, to see Theatr Na n’Óg’s latest production – “Arandora Star” – on Wednesday, 16th November proved to be very enjoyable.  Once again Theatr Na n’Og excelled at bringing to life on stage an historic event.  This year’s production was based on the torpedoing of the liner Arandora Star which was transporting foreign internees and prisoners of war from Britain to Canada.  The play was centred on the Welsh Italian community, with the main character Mr. Fulgoni and his family, representing what happened to the whole Welsh Italian community.  The sound effects, especially the sinking of the ship,  and set were particularly well done.

A thank you to Mr. Barry Hughes for the refreshments  provided at the Museum after the performance.

Heritage and Family History Open Day – 3rd October 2011

There was a large turn out for the Society’s first Open Day held on 3rd October.  We have received a lot of feedback from many sources and everyone has congratulated us on a very successful day, including Mayor Harry Bebell, who spent over an hour touring the displays.

Our members put together a number of displays, made up of material from our archives, and family artefacts, covering a wide range of aspects of the history of our village. The accompanying photographs show the variety of topics covered.

The Society has to thank several visiting organisations who all contributed to the success of the day – the Neath Antiquarian Society, Glamorgan Family History Society, West Glamorgan Archive Services, WAFERS, Park Players Drama Group and our local genealogist Mr. Chris Morris.

We look forward to welcoming those who attended the Open Day to future meetings of the Society.
